At last!, another photo from the ‘Mystery session’!. Who was the photographer?, what studio is this?. Interesting, Paul is still playing the Hofner, and hasn’t reverted back to the Ricky for studio work.

Wow! Amazing. It’s definitely the Apple studio and can only guess that the photographer is…Ethan Russell? Linda? Either way, it’s a great find.

Or is this Trident in the Feb. ’69 session?

  3. stephenmcg says:

It is as last picture in “get back “book but from opposite angle, book was Ethans photos but as Heather is on other shot then maybe Linda too(there are pictues where paul is dressed as such(plus tweed kacket) and linda has the black fur whilst carrying the LLE bag(feb and march dress mode). This one has been sitting as header on Beatles recording facebook site and picture apparantly comes from book that was with stereo lp box.

Obviously everything about it screams “Let It Be” except Paul’s lack of a beard; so it must be February. When did Paul shave it off?

  5. btw Tammy thanks for posting this
    man you are on fire

  6. I don’t think it’s Apple studio’s, the walls look different.

  7. Miss Tammy is on fire, nothing that a poultice, ointment, and a dose of antibiotics won’t fix.

  8. Mr Horse, there is a whole lot of equipment and pedals etc seen on the floor here.

This is Apple Studio. The studio walls had movable acoustic panels with hinges that allowed to flap them either side to change the acoustics of the room. The isolation baffles are gone. The device on the floor is a Fender Soundette drum echo unit. Photograph by Ethan Russell, and it was included in the Get Back book that came with the first issues of the Let It Be LP.

If you read the postings included in the link Johnny Silver posted, you’ll find a great deal of discussion about the dates for this. It clearly seems to be sometime between the 5th and 22nd of Feb. Either the mixing session on the 5th also included some recording or overdubs which might be undocumented, or it’s a rehearsal before going into Trident on the 22nd to start work on “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”. Or they could have tried to record at Apple after it’s refurb, and decided to move to Trident instead.

I thought it was post 7th also re Georges tonsils/hospital visit?
Many blogs have tried to date it but all are hoping for clarification from documents but it does appear to be undocumented,so “mystery sessions”is a perfect epithet. Most unlikely answer mary h is in isolated vocal booth while band plays(not true but the others at rear of get back book,ie paul in striped shirt playing pedal are from MH session).

  12. This might be the best post-LIB pic of the 4 together in a studio.

What a bummer that the facility’s potential was never even attempted. In spite of the absolute lack of levity in the affair, I wish someone could have taken some pictures of the first day of recording there. Everyone staring at the console as it buzzed and hummed and blinked(?) as George Martin screams into a phone…”get me some equipment over here”.

    Another set of VU meters…fried

A picture of Alex in lab coat w/ soldering gun would be nice
    (wearing standard issue bombardier headgear)

I think Alex could redeem himself by giving Lewisohn a concise testimony about all that happened…objectively if possible.

Apple Studio was finished in 1970, it took Emerick 18 months to refurbish the studio. The fact that they are using the Fender Soundette for echo effect (as was the Arbiter Soundimension used on the rooftop concert) clearly points to a rehearsal and not a recording. If they were recording then the echo could be added later during mixing with Trident’s or EMI’s EMT plates and chambers.

  15. MarkC says:

    Didn’t George record LITMW there?

  17. mcarp555 says:

MarcC – Once Apple was refurb’d and finished, it was a top-class studio, according to everyone who used it. George did record much of “Material World” there, but not until ’72-’73. It was too bad they eventually shut it down. It could still be there today, churning out the hits and making money for the Fabs.

  18. MarkC says:

Didn’t Badfinger also record art least one album there?

  19. Lizzie says:

I was going to look in my diaries, but if it’s 1970 I was back in Rio.

  20. Tammy says:

Are we sure this frame is in the original Let it be book?, i can’t find this frame in my copy of it.

  21. Tammy says:

Thanks for the equipment info Mr Horse, as ever, you’re on the ball.

  22. MarkC says:

Compare to kneeling photo of George with Les Paul in the guitar app. John is drinking te and Yoko has pen and paper.

  23. MarkC says:

Same round foot switch at John’s feet and same clothes.

  24. MarkC says:

Sorry, I hadn’t read that beatle source sequence before I posted.

  25. MarkC says:

George is wearing the same sweater in the photos with Joe Cocker when they were working on Joe’s recording of Something. Wasn’t that in March? Also at Savile Row?

  26. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Yes that session was at Apple Studio in February. George was clean shaven in March.

  27. Nick D. says:

Anyone bother to ask Ethan Russell? He is on FB.

  28. mcarp555 says:

Nick – the link from Johnny Silver does mention Ethan’s response towards the end of the discussion.

  29. Russell basically confirms that it’s Apple’s basement. His comment “good guess that it’s during Don’t Let me Down” can be read into in different ways i suppose.

    And speaking of:
