Only Paul seems to be enjoying this photo-op

“It’s uncanny; you could pass for the originals!”

I think this is 16 August 1965, New York
After the screening, there was a cocktail party and buffet. During the party, John crawled underneath the buffet table on all fours, where he asked for some wine. Interestingly, although there was a huge banquet of food at the gathering, when John looked out the window and saw a New York hot dog vendor, he immediately asked one of the Beatles aides to go down and buy him four or five hot dogs.

This one surfaced a couple of days ago: I had never seen it, nor any other pose from that moment. Isn’t it amazing how that can happen so many years later? Then again, when I remember the HUGE boxes full of press photos my friend Denise and I looked through when we went photo hunting at the agencies in London back in the 60’s, I guess these are some of those photos seeing the light of day. I can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it was to be able to afford only a few…

Yup, the others seem disengaged for sure

    If the Cartoon needed something…
    this picture is it.
    Just SOMETHING to prove
    it wasn’t ALL American product.

File under: Revell Model Kits, comic books, shampoo, Murray The K

  8. Cara says:

Yeah, John def looks like he’d been crawling under a table or two. Are those wet spots on his pants or is that just the lighting or something? In any case, I’m sure he had the munchies… half a dozen hot dogs coming up!

  9. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Those photos were not taken is New York but the TVC Studios in London on July 23, 1965, the same day as the Help! premiere and the same offices where the Yellow Submarine animations were designed.

  10. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Erratum: the correct date is Thursday, 29th July 1965. Location: TVC Studios, London.

  11. Guus says:

@A Car.. I never doubt your knowledge, but the story that goed with these Cartoons, see, says that it was in New York, especially about John serching under a table. Those pictues are included on the same sheet with contact prints.

  12. Erin says:

I remember seeing this at Beatle Fest a few years ago-it’s cracked me up ever since. They look so enthused. lol

Hi Guus, my information came from Mitch Axelrod’s article in Beatleology magazine, Vol 7 No. 2 issue, Nov-December 2004. Mitch is the definitive voice on the Beatle cartoons and I would vouch for his research on the subject. let me get in a plug for his book “Beatletoons” Always open for it to be proved otherwise, though. The only thing I find slightly dubious is the hot dog story.

  14. Kwai Chang says:

    Come on, Car…
(that’s why John moved to Nueva York…”New York Onions”)
“oh, vendor…I rather fancy a hot doggy”
    The Magic Lennon

  15. Guus says:

I have sent Mitch Axelroth a message through Facebook, I really hope he will take the time to respond.

  16. Guus says:

I got an answer very fast saying:
“Hi Guus, This event never took place in New York. It was DEFINITELY in London at TVC Studios on Dean Street. Norman Kauffman, who worked at TVC, took 8mm footage of the event and he was definitely in London. And Norman went under that same table to find John. All of the people I interviewed about this screening told me how The Beatles complained about being tired from rehearsing for Blackpool Night Out being performed on Aug 1, only 2 days away and they were going to the Help! premiere that same day. I hope this helps.”

  17. Kwai Chang says:

    Go, Guus!!!
    (Beautiful job…thank you!!!)
