THE FIRST SIGNS:

The photo’s above were the first signs that John and Yoko were starting to stick there heads above the water and emerge back into the public, it started with a pic in Rolling Stone of the couple in Florida, then a pic taken in Palm Beach, then the reality sunk in when photographs of the couple arriving at the studio started to surface, ‘It must be real’ was what i remember thinking.

It’s amazing how much John’s appearance changed over a few months in 1980. Not just a matter of a beard or haircut, but in some of the 1980 photos he looks really old, and then a lot younger in others.

Theres a good book under Yoko’s name which collects a lot of the Summer 1980 photos and I’m always struck but how he looks so old in some of them (e.g the Lilo Raymond ones of him and Yoko in Cafe Fortuna and around the Dakota).

There’s something about this in Fred Seaman’s book – how John could completely different at times: sometimes looking like someone depressed or exhausted and then at other times like energy was streaming through him.

I agree Steward, he was at his chameleon best in 1980, check my December 80 timeline entry to see how in one DAY he could have three to four different looks, just amazing.

Yes, John had an amazing ability to totally change his appearance within only weeks! It amazes me. I’m sure he had fun with it.

I remember seeing a picture of a bearded John in 1979. I worked in a record store. A coworker said she saw hit. I was so amazed to see a bearded John Lennon wearing new glasses, no longer round. I was so waiting for John Lennon to come out of his retirement. And my intuition was telling me we would be coming out soon. I can’t explain it, but I just knew he would be recording again. Can you imagine my amazement when my “friend” told me his father was playing on John Lennon’s new album, but not to say anything? Then it all came crashing down because of one lunatic!!!!!

So many different looks this man had, but all unmistakeably ‘Lennon’…

Or was it more about having a disguise?

Does anyone know exactly when he started recording in 1980?

  9. Chris says:

Lizzie John Lennon started recording in early August of 1980. I remember because I was at my then “friend’s” birthday party. Her step mother was there but her father was not “because he was recoding with John Lennon!”
I was also with my church band that August and we were talking about Lennon recording with this guy i knew. Strangely enough, the recorder they used on this recording was the same one John used on Imagine.
