Paul’s bass playing on Rain is just so ‘fluid’ that it is difficult to explain its sudden appearance (in chronological terms). Was the Rickenbacker bass some kind of super inspiration? Or, is Pet Sounds to blame? Marijuana?
George’s sitar playing? Whatever it was, by the time Taxman gets made, Paul will take everything to a new level of newness!

    Nicely photshopped pic

The Beatles at their most timeless…they could appear today looking and playing like they did in late 1965 and not appear or sound dated at all.

A Car: Do you mean photoshopped as in “cleaned up” or just a fake background for instance..? I only ask as I’ve just emailed Greg with a couple of other pics from this session which until yesterday, I hadn’t seen before. I’m sure Greg will up them soon..I do believe this is a genuine pic

  6. David B says:

Incredible.., didn’t know it was photoshopped. One of the best compositional shots I’ve ever seen. Ever.

    Fan-bloody-tastic.

    Simply beautiful.

Coolest they ever were, and they were very cool all the time

    Fantastic!

(remember them old birds from How I Won The War?)
But, I can’t tell if its legit. In A Car’s behalf, I too, thought this was a very nice cut and paste affair…but, I have studied it and can’t find any sloppy blending of edges. The main reservation is the out of focus John. It seems drastic in comparison to the others. The main evidence for being legit is that I can’t recall seeing these poses(P+G). Shadowing is consistent, as well.
I can’t wait to see the rest.
    Thanks JD!

  10. JD says:

I’ve sent Greg 3 more. One is similar to this one and the other two are of Paul & George together. The P and G ones are definitely not photoshopped. Incidentally, remember the Beatles are raised slightly on a stage here, which makes the background look slightly out of sync..Just a theory..

Hi JD, I meant this pic is a nice composite photoshop – sorry I didn’t make it clearer

This photo looks every bit original to me. i.e. we’re seeing the photograph as it was taken. PS. I’ve been wondering for years when a photo from the “Ed Sullivan” “Rain” promo video might show up (there are plenty of the “Paperback Writer” Ed Clip about). I was beginning to think that the photographer (RW?) had missed that part of the video session…

  13. Lizzie says:

The old bird saying that are in Help, Kwai. Lovely photo!

  14. Don Percy says:

Hey Kwai. John was positioned far enough away from the other two that he should be out of focus. What’s odd is that John is not facing the same way as Paul and George. However, in the color Ed Sullivan Rain clip, John does have a tendency to ‘swing’ o his left; so it makes sense a photographer (RW?) would wait for the moment that he did turn – something he may have done during a rehearsal run…PS. Bring on more from this session…!

  15. Kwai Chang says:

    @Lizzie…
I knew you would ‘help’ me…
Believe it or not, the old birds are in How I Won The War too! In fact, I’m certain that Dick Lester used an outtake from HELP. The girls look exactly the same although the scene is at night in HIWTW. My hunch is that they were originally to be a recurring garnish in HELP but finally ended up with only one scene included. It has been a while, so I don’t remember what they said…but, I recall thinking that their lines were perfectly suited for HELP and fairly akward for HIWTW. I can’t really call it cross-promotion but, it might have just been a joke between Lester and John. I really need to watch it again and see if my theory needs revision…

    @Don Percy…
I understand the focus issue. But, I can’t imagine focusing on George in such a shot. However, the thought of professional stills(slides, chromes, etc.) being snapped during the production certainly seems likely. I think Robert Whitaker took the back cover photo of Revolver…obviously during the Ed Sullivan exclusive intro(Ringo apologizing for them being too busy to be there in person…w/the washing and the cooking). The other pictures by Whitaker are probably the ones used on the collage poster from this promo. That isn’t very many pictures compared to how many were probably taken. The shoot probably took all day so there’s probably a bunch we haven’t seen. This opens up all kinds of possibilities. I still think this picture could have been cobbled from some of the unreleased stuff. I currently think that the backlighting should have the same effect on all three(hair)…but John is not consistent. But, I’m not fully prepared to speculate any further…because yesterday a freak rainstorm developed and a bolt of lightning struck so near to the house that my computer was cooked. It has taken over 24 hours just to get one of the old computers back into shape and back where I love to be.
    Ray-ay-ay-ay-ain…I don’t mind…
    (Lightning SUCKS!)

    Peace, everyone…the weather’s fine!
(not so…for 2GB of coolstuff that wasn’t backed up)

  16. Kwai Chang says:

    Mundo paparazi parasol?
I meant to say that 2TB of unbacked stuff is gone…
    can you heeeeeeeeeeear me?
    Time to start singing backwards…
    Very TERAble…

Of all the pics that I’ve seen from this day John was positioned over to the far left on a podium in Studio One. Whoever put this composite together has placed a solo pic of John into the pic of Paul and George together.
    Comprende?

  18. Kwai Chang says:

    Comprende???
    No compression!!!
    Sorry, to fan the fire.
I was basically just so glad to be back online…
sorry if I hurt your field mister!

  20. Don Percy says:

Hmmmm A Car and A Room…I don’t think that’s correct. In the Ed Sullivan RAIN clip (the only color one), John is camera right – exactly as this photograph shows. I don’t believe that this is a composite…only that John has twisted his body 90 degrees toward the photographer (probably during a rehearsal). The grain, and negative damage across the picture is consistent with a photograph that has not been tampered with. PS. John IS far left for all the other black and white clips of RAIN…

  21. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Thanks Don Percy but how come I’ve seen this exact same shot/pose of John with no one else around him?

  22. Don Percy says:

Hi A Car and A Room…I’m happy to be proved wrong. :) But you’ll need to produce the aforementioned single pic of John! (There may be several with a similar pose…!)

  23. GLCompany says:

This is getting more interesting every day…. :)
Just watched the color RAIN video again and indeed John is standing at the same point where he is in this photo…

    I got to love this…..:)
