Anything RAM is heaven…
(piece of cake)
“Piss of cake” ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh
actually, “Piss off cake” ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I don’t buy it’s ‘Piss off cake’, it makes no sense, an interviewer asked Paul once if that what he said and he ran with it, another in a long list of embelished Paul war stories, same with the origins of the song ‘Let it be’, ‘Mother Malcolm’ anyone?
(I’m just happy that the RAM album still inspires debate)
Ram inspires more than debate these days. There have been THREE Ram tribute albums by Indie artists since 2009. I’ve seen multiple reviewers refer to the album as a “masterpiece” (most recently, The Guardian and another article on Pitchfork.com). Ram is yet another example of a Paul solo album that was ripped to shreds by critics when it was first released and is now viewed in an entirely different light. And it’s about effin time. Great, great album.
As for “piece of cake,” “piss off cake,” I think we’ll never understand exactly how Paul thinks but I think it could well be a dig at John and Yoko connected to their “eating chocolate cake in the bag” PR stunt.
Either way, Too Many People is a great song with a great lyric that should have resonated with John (had he been less angry): Too many people preaching practices, don’t let ‘em tell you what you wanna be.” Exactly.
can we once and for all decide
what the opening vocal says on Too Many People?
I always struggled to decipher it…
or “piece of ca-a-a-a-a-a-aaaake”???
I’m pretty sure he wanted to write “two many people”…
the album is peerless
do we need to debate Eat At Home??? (breakfast in bed)
Linder could have explained it best…
my long haired lady…
most flies…they got three legs…but mine got one…
(tell them, Tammy)
any consideration here is appreciated…
and probably just the beginning of rambling…
(caution with RAM Army vets)
People give John Lennon the nod for writing about oral sex in Going Down on Love (from Walls & Bridges). But Paul wrote about it first in Eat at Home but was so subtle about it, most people missed the meaning.
Great track. And I love that he’s celebrating the joys of sex — not with a groupie — but with his wife. No wonder the critics all thought he was square. Who else at the time but Paul wrote about having great sex with your wife?
I hear “piece of cake.” And “dreadful cantata.”
Louise, thank you ever so kindly…
I love your frankness
Kwai, when you visit Tingle Manor i’ll slide open my sealed drawers of aural fun, and pull out a disc with Ram’s vocals, you can clearly hear it’s ‘Piece of cake’ .. it makes lyrical sense given the songs subject. Here’s another one i’m throwing in for free, you know that muttering at the start of ’3 Legs’?, that’s Paul asking Linda ‘These a good fit?’ .. ie the headphones.
When i saw Paul in 2005, flying from Australia to the U.S for it, it was worth every cent it cost me, JUST to see Paul do ‘Too many people’ live, you know ‘Ringo Klaus’ in the movie ‘I want to hold your hand’ when he’s in the audience for the Ed Sullivan show?, THAT’S what i was like when Paul said ‘This is for the Wings fans’ .. i went APE SHIT!!. (I was in such a state i didn’t even care about, or notice the movements of my arch nemisis’ “The Rubby’s”).
I love to be teased…
BUT NOT ABOUT RAM!!!
I’m headed to LAX and I’ll be in that drawer by tomorrow night…
(we’ll talk soon)
Taken in NYC; I know a bunch of people who were there!
