Steady on, old bean! I found Pete’s book to be one of the better books to come out in the immediate flood after 1980 – done with affection, honesty and detail. It was co-written with the late, great Nick Schaffner who wrote one of the most underrated Beatles biogs “The Beatles Forever”.

    Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeechhhhhhh(to a halt)
Perhaps that was a little harsh. I read many of them. I thought Pete was paid ‘by-the-detail’. At the time it seemed like he dug deeper into the ‘personal’ memory bag and pulled out things that only lead to speculation. I really don’t even want to hear about John punching Bob Wooler…OR, ANYTHING ELSE about Spain. It’s unnecessary and at the time it seemed like the ‘sealer of the deal’ for that cash advance.
In Pete’s behalf, I don’t think anyone has been as honest about the amount of ‘friendship’ they received from any Beatle!
Old bean? I love that…and consider it a Supreme compliment…

one of the (many) things I like about this site….we can disagree, argue our point of view, yet stay respectful and friendly :) Oh, and it helps that Ms Tammy is moderating to keep the trolls away.

I really like the way I can write the way my mind thinks and know the whole time that I don’t need to worry about being wrong. Being corrected or criticized around here is an honor and an education that just can’t be had elsewhere. Everyone here seems to really love The Beatles.
    That’s all I need.

Kwai, i enjoy reading your posts and Im glad you are part of this community. You are always entertaining. Many times I giggle, sometimes I double up with laughter. sometimes I wish i could figure out what the heck you are on about. It would be fascinating to be inside your head for 24 hours. Imagine if you and John had somehow met, the wondrous creativity and craziness that could have been :)

What happens in a person’s life is already written. The most he can do is move through life as his destiny wills. I am on the right path…because I do not seek it. Whatever The Beatles really were, and even more than I love their music…I loved their polite wittiness. Radiant coolness is rare. That’s all I’m trying to do is pretend that I am clever in a literary context. I know I’ll never be as clever as John’s books. The best I can do is to continue to try and not be that. Maybe, and, until then…I will thank you in advance for tolerating me. If there is anything you don’t understand…it’s probably something stolen from John’s books.

Thank you for the kind words/support.
For me, this is the best place to relax and enjoy the experience of being a Beatle fan. I really hope there isn’t too much moderating to be done. Organic gardening moderates itself doesn’t it? Play the game existence to the end…of the beginning!

Such great information to be gathered from this site! I may miss it for a few weeks but I always come back! The Beatles Forever!

I’m with Datey… I love Pete’s book, too. Such a great source of adolescent mayhem. Remember that John told Pete to make as much money off of knowing a Beatle as he could. (Of course, Pete is the source of that quote, but it does sound like something John would say.) And all he did was write a book and make a few appearances. Pete is true blue in my book.

Thanks for bringing up Pete’s book. Re-reading it now.

    John: “I’m Jesus Christ…”
Pete: “Let’s not tell anyone for at least a couple of days”

I suppose Pete was as loyal a friend as a Beatle could have. I think I was just mad at him for crossing an ethical boundary that seems to exist in my mind only. His was one of the better books…but, it could have been better. He could have summarized things in the name of loyalty. If I tell you that I’m REALLY Jesus Christ…please don’t repeat that EVER without telling me first. I doubt that Nicholas Schaffner’s function was much more than that of Editor. It wasn’t a book of Beatle facts as much as it was one testimonial from an insider. So, more than a cash-in…but, less than devoted. I wonder if there’s anything he would have rewritten if given the chance to.
Maybe it was just too soon after 1980…

Hi guys! From what I read here, it seems I have to buy Pete’s book. Only I have to wait, because I have made a promise to myself that I will not buy one single book, Beatle or otherwise, until I finish mine. You should have seen me at the bookstore the other day running my busy fingers through Mark’s “Tune In” (British edition) and having to put it down… Pain! I wish I was as consistent when thinking about giving up chocolate altogether… Have a great day.
