Wow, I’d like a date on this; must be one of the earliest gigs with Ringo (still playing his Premier set).

  2. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

It’s one of the Mersey Beat Showcase gigs from April 1963 – not sure which one though. I’ve looked at the pics I have from the Majestic Ballroom, Finsbury Park (on the 24th) and while the backdrop is the same, I don’t think this is from that same gig.

1962 12 15 – 1 the Majestic Ballroom, Birkenhead … (Look At The Mersey Beat)

C’est dommage, que je ne puisses poster d’autres photos du même jour.

That’s pity, that i can’t upload photos, bcause i’ve got another ones of the same day …

  4. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Sorry, yes, Alcaloid is spot on.

  5. Pete F. says:

Merci pour la date alcaloid et bonjour de Montréal!

  6. Kwai Chang says:

Aren’t the pickups on the Hofner supposed to be black?

  7. Keith Bratley says:

Can anyone have a stab at what song they are performing from John and George’s finger placements?

  8. mcarp555 says:

Some Hofner pickups are black, but not the ones in Paul’s basses. His ’61 “Cavern” uses ‘diamond’ pups, and the more familiar ’63 uses ‘staple’ ones. Perhaps you’re thinking of the ‘blade’ or ‘toaster’ pups used on later Hofner basses.

More info can be found here: http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/hofnerfs/pickups/pup.html

  9. Kwai Chang says:

Hofner pick-ups are pure animal magnetism.
(@mcarp555…Thanks for that cool link…I noticed that the company added the 2014 Hofner 5000/1 Fretless Bass to the line)

  10. Guus says:

Great Photo of that day, thnx for sharing

  11. Guus says:

They played two shows on this night. The first was a conventional booking, but the second was the first Mersey Beat poll awards show.

  12. Michael says:

Anybody know what model Gretsch amp that is on the far left of the photo? I have never seen one like it before.

  13. mcarp555 says:

I don’t think the amp belongs to the band; Paul *appears* to be playing through it, but he’s documented as using a homemade Quad II amp with a tall cab (known as the ‘coffin’). So this may have been rented or borrowed, or just on stage and not being used.

  14. Michael says:

Thanks, mcarp555… Having seen the Vox, I figured it was not Fab gear. I was just curious as to the model.

  15. LeftyBass says:

mcarp555, I don’t think that’s Ringo’s Premier kit – his was a brown finish (Mahogany Duroplastic). They may be borrowed?

  16. mcarp555 says:

LeftyBass – True, dat. I just saw “non-Ludwig”.

BTW, I too, am a LH bassist!

  17. Nika says:

They’re singing ‘A Taste of Honey’. “Off our LP”
