NICE ONE:

These photo’s have me flumoxed, it looks like the Starclub in Hamburg by the look of the sweaters the boys are wearing and the mic John is singing into looks like a Starclub microphone, but then Johns hair looks really long like 1965! to me it looks like a party and they have grabbed instruments to play around with, i have no idea who’s guitar John is using.

* UPDATE: It turns out the photo’s were taken in Austria during the filming of ‘Help’.

I love this photo, how come you didn’t post the other one that was taken at the same time?

It was taken during a break in the filming of “Help” in Austria. Looks like they may have joined in at a bar or something

I would agree with Anonymous, especially because John’s guitar doesn’t look like any that he’s known to have owned.

The other guitarist in the pictures is Jacky Spelter and on his page here is a not very good pic of him and John from the same session, which it says was in an Austrian hotel where they joined in with a gig his band was playing. Page is in German sorry. It’s mentioned in a book of the Beatles in Austria, “Servus Beatles”. And Lewisohn’s “Day By Day”, 18th March 1965. I presume they borrowed instruments off the band.

one of the songs performed was summertime by paul, they did a bunch of rock n roll standards, and got pretty drunk too

    Great photos.

I would have loved to hear John playing the Jazzmaster, it certainly looks like a Jazzmaster.

Richard Lester, a pianist, also was in on this jam session.

I swear John had some Japanese in him. Look at the first photograph and at his later ones in the late Seventies.

  13. Tim says:

John is playing a Fender Jaguar which was introduced in 62 and was a very expensive guitar. That, the hair, and to a lesser extent the fact that the photo is color rules out the Star Club.
