Great shot! I love the photos taken during 1980. John looks energized, happy & at peace with himself and his life. He’s writing, back in the studio and making music again.
His life taken far too soon, leaves us with his legacy of talent, humor and love.
Did Yoko pick out that guitar?
Deer in headlights shot. Not much is known about John’s Sardonyx guitar, but he’s known for ordering all sorts of gadgets so he could’ve picked it himself.
get yer mind out of her gutter kwai. a friend
call it bad (good) lighting…
you should see me at the frozen food section…
(I bet you go through a lot of t-shirts)
I love anything from the 1979/1980 era. John was a mystery. All his beloved fan were pining for him to come out of retirement. We all wondered what the new John Lennon would look like. We knew John was a chameleon and could change his look drastically at a whim. No one else could do that like John! And John held true to his chameleon ways even up until his tragic heart breaking end.
Wonderful photo, thanks so much for sharing. : ) <3
I know its just one picture but to me he never looked so good at this time, he was only forty but would pass for fifty here, the boy had certainly gone by this stage and this was indeed the man, but he just looks sad to me or maybe just a bit hollow, dont know why. Anyway the guitar is naff but at least he was dabbling with new things!
gutter meaning gutter kwai.
polyester has its attributes…
(especially in white…but I like cotton)
james, i think there are times when john looks pretty good during 80′ and other times he shows his age.
Will someone please explain to me how John could look sooooo fookin’ cool during every phase of his life? Always cool and always a rocker!!!
it breathes better kwai.
I love that guitar.
that’s exactly why I invented the ‘ClearBra’…
(don’t make me get into it)
…the one on the floor…
@JAMES… He looked better in August, but then seemed too thin as the year progressed. I think this pic is from the first day back in the studio.
I always thought how unconfortable seems that Sardonyx guitar to play. Those bars may cut the circulation blood in both arm and leg.
Thanks for sharing
but what about winter???
I’m a huge 1980 John fan. Huge. I love the music, the attitude, the interviews, the photos- all of it. I get that people feel he was too gaunt/skinny but to me he always had this innate sexiness that just jumped out. Even with the scruffy beard and wearing khakis or some such. He just always looked sexy and cool. And there are a lot of 1980 pictures where he was just plain handsome. This photo, to me, is sexy cool rock and roll John. I love it. Thank you.
I suppose as a guy I would say he always did look cool its true, thats John Lennon, he could easily have been an actor full time and I think he may have secretly always known that, image chnage came natural too him, my point regarding Johns look was that the changes were often quite drastic, he actually often look,s entirely different from his former self that is unprecidented in the media/fame circle, maybe David Bowie was the nearest thing to him that way but he used costume and theatre, John used himself!I think as an artist he pleyed with the form and the form was himself, Im unconcerned really about which look was best etc etc, I just find it fascinating that his chameleon like persona was so evident, it would have been interesting to see if at some stage in the future that might have been he ventured back down the beatle image of 1964, I remember seeing George Harrison on a chat show in ther uk(wogan I think and a rare appearance)where George had his hair in a beatle cut circa 1966, it was so strange to see him there in 1980 something with a jacket on and haircut looking as if hed stepped off the paperback writer promo video!cool was the word, thye all had such a strong visual image at that time which I don t think any of them ever bettered really, so I often wonder what John might have looked like if he revisited it too and maybe gained a little weight again, he never had abetter image inmy mind that that middle 60′s period and judging by the haircut and look he had for part of the double fantasy period he was indeed playing with a return with a similar image, maybe the beatles for sale period, then suddenly he jumped back to his old rock and roll look before the final unpredicted curtain fell…who knows eh?Paul did “coming up” as a video and took th episs completely out of his early beatle look and that was cool too!
