    Beautiful!! I first saw it in the book “Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs”
    I’m usually not a big fan of photography self portraits because most of the time they’re really tacky today. But Linda’s self-portraits were always classy. :)

    This is an interesting way of showing that she was more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.

    In fact, now that I think of it, she did several self-portraits where she is deliberately obscured. There’s one she shot in the 70s that’s a picture of Paul through a store window and all you see of her is her reflection in the glass, yet she called a self-portrait. And there’s another one she took just before her death when she’s in the studio of some famous artist (whose name escapes me at the moment) where she takes a picture of herself in a badly distorted old mirror in his studio. You can see her but just her outline — no details. It’s a haunting photo given that she would die shortly after.

    Lee, in case you are wondering, the name of the famous artist is Francis Bacon. The self-portrait was shot in the bathroom of his London studio in 1997, just months before Linda succumbed to breast cancer. It’s one of my favorite photographs. Cracked mirror, the room lit only by a single hanging light bulb without a lamp shade, death mask of William Blake to the left, and her gaunt figure with her formerly long blonde hair cropped to the head due to the ravaging effects of chemotherapy. The stark atmosphere and the fact that she didn’t have long to live usually frightens me when I see this photo, but it’s a genuine masterpiece.

    @sandra & lee
    Where would I be able to see this photograph? It sounds wonderful. Is it in Linda’s latest book?

  10. Sandra says:

    As a matter of fact, it is in her latest book (Linda McCartney:Life In Photographs). You can also see this Photograph if you Google Linda McCartney Self Portrait, 1997. I hope this helps! 😉
