Are the ‘yellow sub’ buttons in any way related to the movie?
I don’t recall seeing that particular caricature on any official artwork.

  2. Pete F. says:

The Fabs at the very height of their Fabness!

p.s. I have one of those buttons, can’t recall where I got it though
(you know what they say about the 60′s)

  3. mcarp555 says:

Probably either a generic “YS” button design (maybe sent by fans), or maybe (as I’ve always assumed) a very early prelim design for the film. It’s very probable the movie was already in the works by this time (18 months to hand-draw a full-length animated feature is not unheard of).

  4. Sam P. says:

Absolutely the height of their fabness, well put Pete!

It seems fairly obvious John was dancing with some space gnomes on this occasion (lysergic). I heard somewhere that another Fab lad was tripping during the launch, can anyone confirm this?

Based on a quote from John we know that during the shoot for the Pepper album cover “two are flying, two are not.” I know that during ’66 and ’67 John had “thousands” of trips, but I’m curious who else joined him during the cover/press launch since these are some of the more well-known images.

    Cheers!

  5. Tammy says:

Not sure about the Pepper launch, but if you look at pic from the ‘Our World’ press meet before the broadcast, Ringo and George are absolutely baked! :-)

  6. Sam P. says:

That was approaching the Summer of Love! I wish I could’ve lived in the sixties, I’d be baked too.

Thank you Tammy for the best beatles site there is! I’ve been following it rigorously for years

    Yellow Sub badge:
On the lapel was a badge from the New York Workshop of Non-violence. Their emblem is a yellow submarine with what looked like daffodils sprouting from it…

May 19, 1967. Press launch Sgt.Pepper LP. In the house of Brian Epstein,24 Chapel Street London. At the end of the evening John was K.O. (cfr. Book ‘John’ – Cynthia Lennon)

  10. Lizzie says:

I was in London that day, though, of course, at home – actually, I just read in my diary that a friend and I waited for Paul at his house until 11:00pm but since he didn’t come home we left. I have always heard John was high that day, though at the time I was still 15 and unfortunately they didn’t have “drugs 101″ at Catholic school, so I always thought John was drunk when he acted funny. It took me a while to realize it was something else… Can you imagine how frustrating it was to discover the next day or so that they had been somewhere and we didn’t see them because we didn’t find out in time?

  11. Michael says:

Was the Pepper launch party the event that Derek Taylor and his wife Joan came back to London (from LA) to attend? I think this also marked his return to the Beatles’ inner circle as press officer, again (?) If so, I thought I remembered Joan saying that John, George, Pattie and Cyn picked them up at the airport in the Rolls, gave them both acid and went to Brian’s. It seems Derek had a double dose. One from John and one from George. If this be the case, it stands to reason that at least John and George were “colorized” (and Paul certainly looks it). Joan also talked about tripping into the morning and watching the sunrise from the garden, “sitting in an English garden, waitng for the sun…”

  12. Jorge says:

Great insight Lizzie! Thanks for those “I was there” moments! Great to hear from a fan’s perspective

  13. Alex of Bronx says:

    Michael,
I think the party you are talking about was Brians birthday party. Weren’t they all tripping in the limo listening to Whiter Shade of Pale by Procal Harem on a record player in John’s Limo. I’m not sure but kinda remember.

  14. Tammy says:

Was Les Anthony driving John by this time?, man .. the sights he must have seen and heard :-)

  15. A Car And A Room And A Room And A Room says:

Yes, Derek was not at Chapel Street – he and Joan came back for Brian’s acid-drenched garden party in Sussex – the one where Cynthia almost jumped out the window. Les Anthony was driving John in 67.

  16. Lizzie says:

Anthony was there in 67, for sure. I remember him well, we used to talk to him.

  17. Michael says:

    Thanks, all!

  18. Time to also give a shout out to Kenny Lenwoods amazing site for the first pic (proudly, and lovingly tarted up by Miss Tammy)
