An absolutely lovely picture of John!Thank you for posting :)

  2. Kwai Chang says:

    is this a gripweed costume?
    (I never saw the movie)
    if not movie related, then
    where is he coming from?
    subtle…not private

  3. Ken Wood says:

    Help-related – not Gripweed.

  4. Michael says:

“Help!” related? National Health glasses? No sideboards? Hmmmmm….

  5. Ken Wood says:

Hmmm… maybe I`m wrong! Actually: I think I am wrong indeed.
You were right about Gripweed I guess, though this is not part of the film.
I however now seem to recall that it was taken in Germany during the filming. Possibly in Hannover?
    Man, I really failed here!

  6. Julio Serra says:

Ken, I think there’s no problem about failings concerning Beatles dates, occasions and places. It’s completely normal. So many information in our heads for so long, and you know what? we rarely make mistakes. We get everything right most of the time.

  7. Michael says:

Ken…no worries, man. Trying to figure out the details of these pics is what I love the most about this blog. Failure is not possible! Just good times.

  8. Jennifer says:

Thanks for posting, I’ve never seen this picture in such high quality before. :)

  9. MarkZapp says:

This photo WAS taken on the set of “How I Won The War”. John probably just happened to pick up a prop hat and scark lying around and the photo was taken. Note his eyeglasses and the short sideburns.

  10. Kwai Chang says:

    Well, thanks everyone…
I just love the ‘experts’ all trying to work together
to sort out what got overlooked during those seven years!!!
I’m mystified by this pic…I hope Mimi got a copy
    (come hither, guitar critic)…
perhaps this was a ‘dig’ at the ethnicity of the manager…
(as is my theory about the “unemployed struggling painter” that was almost on the cover of Pepper…General Winston Marzipan)

  11. Ken Wood says:

To make good for my initial blunder:
This was taken during the german part of How I Won The War by the german assistant of the special effects man. Exact date unknown.
Not sure why they had this old helmet prop around – after all the film was set during WWII not WWI.
The answer was in the excellent (but only available in german) book “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand”.
    Thanks for the encouraging words!

  12. Kwai Chang says:

    Thanks, Ken
    very good research…
    I don’t own that book

  13. greg raymond says:

Didn’t John get that haircut in Germany? I love the fact that us Beatle fans know more about dates, locations, years and days than the Beatles themselves . I suppose it IS a whole dofferent experience going thru it all rather than reading about it over and over thru the years. Viva La Beatles fans!!!!

  14. lizzie says:

you’re so right, greg! i feel like i’m going to beatle college while i read this blog – to which, as most everyone knows, i am totally addicted – and feel great when i can help come to a conclusion about a photo. i haven’t read that many books on the boys (i buy them for the photos…) but there are things i remember from being there.

  15. greg raymond says:

Lizzie, I would love to sit and have a conversation with you someday!!!!! Any updates on YOUR book?????

  16. A different Jennifer says:

    Love it!!!

  17. lizzie says:
