    He might be using the pliers to clip the excess string (some have little edges used to strip wiring).

    Oh BTW this is the Framus 12-string “Hootenanny” used in “Help!” (as you can see from the set behind him). It was played on “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and “Help!” itself (recording only, not the video).

    mcarp555 is right. When you put strings on a guitar, there is always some extra length that you’re supposed to clip off

    I know what John is doing, it’s just the fact he’s handling something that requires manual dexterity. The man couldn’t hold a knife and fork without the table falling over. :-)
