Discuss, eh? Okay… the only thing I’ve ever heard about this photo is that it was possibly taken at the March of Dimes fundraiser in April ’74.

How strange that there was a pic taken of J&Y taken in spring ’74 when this pic was taken. I’m pretty sure that’s Mick Jagger next to Yoko.

The March of Dimes Fundraiser was April 1974 on a Sunday afternoon in Central Park. I know I met John and Harry Nielson when they came off of the back of the truck/stage. John had a Sgt. Pepper type moustache that sunday but his hair was about the same as this photo, so I bet this photo was about the same time as the March of Dimes but this looks like the pm. There was no Yoko at the March of Dimes . The Brooklyn Bridge and the Chambers Bros. performed. It was close Cara.
    Regards

Alex, what an experience but err, John had no moustache. There’s plenty of pics and film from that day that prove it. I’m inclined to think this has a March of the Dimes lineage, too.

    Car,
I do this all from memory I really don’t look anything up, but I do remember one pix of John holding a small child on stage that day, it might have been a NY Daily News photo memory a bit fuzzy and I would sear JL had a stache, and when I saw the two of them I remeber thinking this is the only time since the breakup that I saw him with a stache. It is fine you prove me wrong but I swear he had a stache. I am sure we will talk.
    Best
    Alex

  6. Tammy says:

No stache that day, i have a ton of video from the March of dimes as well. This seems to be the only photo to surface of John and Yoko together during the lost weekend, besides the backstage photo at Eltons concert.

  7. Kwai Chang says:

Was Yoko there for a scheduled intel exchange with May?
John looks like he’s surprised or bummed.
And Jagger(?) hasn’t ever looked that good since.
    Let’s go to the troubadour…

  8. Tammy says:

I’m betting my left one that isn’t Jagger, not even close :-)

  9. Cara says:

I’ve been researching and have not found any evidence of Yoko being at the March of Dimes fundraiser, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Maybe they were just keeping it discreet? John and Harry certainly look the same as the Central Park walk-on. This could be evidence of a new twist in the Ballad of J & Y.

  10. bill c. says:

Could that be Julian in the shades behind John ?

  11. @ Bill.
Julian was born in 1963….He would have had to be one mature 11 year old if that were him (It’s not)…Besides there are lots of photo’s of John, May and Julian taken that year..

Looking again I’m now half inclined to agree with you, Tam, although they did hang out together a lot on both coasts during this time and throughout the year (’74). I think it was the lips and shades that did it.

Do any of you good people have access to the photo I mentioned above, where John was on stage holding a child on the day in question. I can see the pic in my minds eye and I would love to see it again. It is like a 3/4 shot of himright in Central Park.
    Please Please Help me.

  14. Nick says:

    Alex,
I may have that photo you are talking about. I will look when I get home tonight from work. I do remember that picture of him hold that child.

  15. Nick says:

oh, That’s not Mick Jagger. Lips and nose are are all wrong.

  16. ALEX OF BRONX says:

    Hey Nick,
If you have it can you please post it, that pix I swear had the stache.
    Thanks Buddy

  17. Markzapp says:

It kind of looks like Rick Derringer next to John but it definitely is not Mick.

  18. Nick says:

Alex, I found the snap you were talking about. John is holding a little girl and Harry is holding a little black boy(they are both standing on the stage while someone is talking into a microphone) This picture was taken by Bob Gruen. John didn’t have a stache but Harry did have a beard. Now, here comes the tricky part. Harry looks to be wearing the same jacket in the photo here and in Bob’s photo. John is wearing a light colored t-shirt and black jacket as the one posted here. If I have to bet, I would say that what Miss Tammy posted is from the March of Dimes benefit, later that night. I have to assume that John has his jacket closed, covering the colored t-shirt above. In the photo in the book, he has the jacket open. It’s the same dark jacket in both photos and Harry’s outfit matches both photos too. Comments?

  19. Tammy says:

    Excellent work Nick :-)

  20. Cara says:

@Nick ~ If you look at color pix or video of that day, you can see that John’s shirt is a darkish blue. In some of the b&w photos I’ve seen of that event, John’s shirt looks black, as it does in this photo… because darker blues often look black in b&w photos. I don’t think his jacket is closed, I just think his shirt looks black. But I agree that they are wearing the same clothes as the March of Dimes event.

  21. Nick says:

@Cara, yes, that makes sense. I believe Miss Tammy’s photo is from that event.

  22. ALEX OF BRONX says:

Thank You All. I swore I saw a stache that day but obviously I was wrong, can’t believe I saw a stache, wonderful day none the less even though now I feel like a jerk Haha !!

  23. Cara says:

@Alex ~ No need to feel bad, it was the ’70s! I remember what the air smelled like back then! ;-) How unbelievably cool, though… you actually met John there? Did you talk to him?

  24. ALEX OF BRONX says:

    Cara,
I was behind the truck/stage because we were so far away when they walked out on stage really could not see them. So it was do or die, stay where we were or take a chance and wait behind stage waiting and hoping for the exit. I picked this up from a cousin of mind who did side work as a roadie. Anyway, we were behind the stage and lo and behold the door opened and they both came down the stairs. I was a 17 yr old kid and this was the first Beatle I ever saw. John looked nervous but very cool. I didn’t know what to say to him but I had to say something, I didn’t want to ask him about the Beatles not after all the bad stuff that went down in the early 70′s so I asked him how Yoko was not knowing at the time they were seperated, he said she was fine, then I asked him why he didn’t play a song and he said I didn’t think about it, then I asked him if he was going to tour and go back on stage and he said something like I don’t know but George should be around by the end of the year and low and behold George did Dark Horse later on in the year. I didn’t know what else to say to him, I’m lucky I did not pass out, I couldn’t believe it was John F–k–g Lennon, it is definitely a high light something I will never ever forget even though I still swear he had a stache but it was him and you guys proved me wrong and yes Cara you nailed me the air smelled real nice at that time. Just writing this is bringing a tear to my eye. It was so wonderful having JL around the city at that time it was like having a magical person around. John left whenI had nothing else to say I was tongue tied but not once did it seem like I was bothering him.
Very cool guy who I miss to this day like a family member .
Thanks for lettimg me relive it again Cara.
