lovely to see all the photos together! does anyone know the date? i’m not very good at that.
Wasn’t this the very first day of recording? Roger was just at Beatlefest in March of this year.
Generally, I love the pictures of John taken in 1980. But I don’t like this look with such long hair at all. He looks so much better with short hair I think.
Hi Lizzie. I think recording started sometime in the early days of August 1980. I want to say somewhere between the 4th & 7th but I’m not sure if that is correct. John certainly looks tan … perhaps from his days basking in the Bermuda sunshine.
those were the legs my friend…
we thought they’d never end…
Thanks for these and all the lovely pictures you posted today. : )
August 7, 1980
It was definitly a Saturday. I was at the Dakota and saw John & Yoko (2nd time) the day these photos were taken. When the picture sleeve to “Watching The Wheels” came out, I recognized John’s outfit right away. Unfortunately, John was in a hurry and couldnt sign autograph, but I asked how the recording was going. His answer: “Great, I hope you’ll buy it.” What a day.
Great pics! Although the first one leaving the Dakota is spooky, considering that’s just about where he was shot a few months later. My favourite is the 7th one down: just John (sorry Yoko), eyes closed, head turned & groovin’.
ps: what the hell kind of guitar is that??
Sigh… and to think I was at one of the musicians kid’s birthday party this very day. Sigh… This musician’s kid said he thought “John was very conceited.” I’ll never forget that.
hi there lizzie what about your book? I don’t think these are all the photos taken that day. I have another from a 1980 new york post newspaper where john is seated looking up.
So this is how he looked doing Nobody Told Me, and most of the other Milk & Honey tracks—not as I’d ever imagined but still cooler than most.
Pete – the guitar is a Sardonyx; Tammy did a group of pictures on it back in September, 2010. You can Google it and read about the history – it didn’t really catch on. One interesting note is that John did play his original 1958 Rickenbacker Capri on Double Fantasy and Walking on Thin Ice; unfortunately there aren’t any pics of him doing so – of course you never know what might show up on here! If I remember right, he played the ’58 when doing overdubs the night of Dec 8.
I too noticed the location of the first photo… 30+ years later and I still instantly recognize those locations (Dakota, Hit Factory on West 48th). I guess that’s why i still feel really strange when I go see the Dakota… when I look at the pictures of me standing by the entrance, I can clearly see the mixed emotions about being there on my face.
The serious look, Why not smile John and Yoko. Love the photos of John here.
John used to tell everyone that all of his Beatle guitars were gone. No No No…right upstairs, stored in another apt. in the Dakota, every Beatle guitar, suit and tons of memoribilia sat neatly stored. He kept everything! These photos of John show just how bad his eating disorder had become. He’s emaciated ! He looks like he was in a concentration camp for Christ sake ! This was one of the reasons why he bled to death so fast after he was shot. Believe me, this stuff is very hard to say for me. I named my son after John but he didn’t stand a chance from those bullets…there was nothing to him. His legs were like a couple of twigs. If he has been 50 lbs heavier, which was a normal weight for his height, he may have had a fighting chance to survive. Ahh John why you my man ?
It’s true that John looked very thin, though I don’t think he looked unhealthy on the last pictures taken in December 1980. I also wished that John had been fatter when he got the bullets. But I read that he didn’t have a chance then as the first bullet hit the aorta. So I guess it wouldn’t have made a difference. I think they should have treated right on the place where he was shot and not wasted time with the transport.
He absolutely looked unhealthy in 1980. And sadly, he looked far far older than 40.
I think that on the cover of Double Fantasy John looked quite young AND healthy. I really depends on the picture and also on the haircut.
My dear Beatle friends, MUST WE START ARGUING ABOUT JOHN’S WEIGHT WHENEVER A PHOTO OF HIM FROM 1980 IS POSTED? Ahh, who am I to preach. Carry on. It’s just an observation.
@ Chris: I agree !! please ppl, no more endless speculation about John’s weight in 1980.
John told us he was on a healthy macrobiotic diet of fish, vegetables, rice, and tea. He was healthy and full of energy. He has been gone almost 32 years, let him rest in peace.
I’m the same Chris, it’s pure speculation, i go batso having to read through these each time, who knows, none of us ever will.
That damn guitar is so skinny it looks like a Bahama Snow Sled…
Look at photos of people from the late 1970′s John wasn’t too skinny. Look at Mick Jagger, David Bowie etc. People in general were a lot thinner back then. In the USA overweight is normal now. Let’s super size that
What’s the big fuss about John’s weight in 1980 ?
John was extremely thin during filming for ”How I won the war” 13 years previous.
It’s all about the music !!!!!!!
It was August 7th, see http://solobeatlesphotosforum.freeforums.org/07-august-1980-new-york-city-ny-t19.html
Two things about these pics:
1) I know Yoko is a bitty little thing, but YOKO DID YOU HAVE TO ROLL THOSE SHORT-SHORTS UP TO MAKE THEM EVEN SHORTER?
2)I think this was the first pic I ever saw of John wearing a wedding ring.
