On the broadcast George sang harmonies into Paul’s mike but then this is the rehearsal so could be for ‘I Feel Fine’ – or ‘I’m Down’ before John switched to his Vox organ
and next week we’ll be in color…
Yes such a pity, Kwai – you’d think CBS would realize “we have The Beatles on this week, let’s make this our first transmission in colour.” Even just as a test!
Too much power behind the cameras!!!
This was not the reheasal. During the rehearsal, Lennon was not wearing a tie – as usual for him during tv appearances rehearsals – and Harrison wore a light-blue shirt and did not wear a jacket or a tie.
Very puzzling. Perhaps the explanation can be found here: http://www.rarebeatles.com/photopg7/sullivan.htm
It indicates that there were 2 rehearsals that day – 11am (no audience), and a “dress rehearsal” with audience at 2:30. Visually, I’m finding only one difference (besides George sharing John’s mic) between this photo and the broadcast: George’s collar. He seems to have his top button open for the rehearsal.
Could they have taped another song (with Paul on lead) which never aired? And was not kept as a result?
I’m sure it’s a rehearsal of some kind as the photographer wouldn’t be allowed to get that close during the actual taping – unless they had different laws at the time in America
I think you have the answer, Bob. The 11am rehearsal is the one Henry the Horse is referring to – there are plenty of cool colour pics around e.g. John wearing dark mirrored shades talking to Brian, etc. This MUST be the 2:30 afternoon rehearsal before an audience. As for them taping another song, I doubt it, Don. As with Blackpool Night Out two weeks earlier they would have just stuck to the 6 songs they’d rehearsed. And even if they’d wanted to, they would probably have run out of time. I’m hoping that somewhere in the CBS vaults, the afternoon rehearsal still exists.
I’m pretty sure that it is not I Feel Fine. It’s probably I’m Down rehearsals or any other song where Paul is the lead singer.
Lucky audience. Did not know that you could get a ticket for a Beatles rehearsal. Although there is plenty of evidence that the press were allowed. I can imagine John using his SHAAATTUUPPP YU voice when things got a little too raucous.
Ah, “I Feel Fine” One of my early Beatle songs. You know, this is not an easy song to play. The opening riff has to be done just right. John was in his prime and white hot when he came up with this song, He also wrote and played the opening riff. Any guitarist/Beatles’ fan worth his salt knows this riff! We miss you Johnny !
this is not “I feel fine”, George and John never shared the mic on this song. In that show, George shares the mic with Paul on the chorus. I think that they are rehearsing “I’m down” with john without the organ.
Anyone know who this photographer is? And where did this photo come from?
