It’s like Sgt Pepper projectile vomited onto the first row.

Great close-up of John’s pychedelic apparel that evening. Cyn’s almost getting into the vibe, too.

We’re a long, long way from Art School…
(is non-conformity harmful to the eyes?)
The kaleidoscope of color that is The Lennons is so bright that I only just noticed the handsomely dressed Ringo…perhaps longing for his sunglasses.
(ships in the night need not have matching paint-schemes…)

Cynthia looks fantastic there, always a classy lady. She did not deserve the shit that John & Yoko heaped on her later. She had humility and class thru it all.

  6. Michael says:

Maybe it’s because I know what’s soon about to happen to their marriage, but she doesn’t look “comfortable”.

    Michael, my thoughts exactly!
Hindsight is always 20/20 and looking at this photo & several from Rishikesh one gets the feeling that the dynamics were changing between John & Cyn.
By the time this photo was taken (October 1967), John’s meeting with Yoko at Indica was nearly one year ago. The Beatles (within 4 months time) would embark on a trip to India (Feb 1968) where Yoko would send little notes to John in the post (“Look up at the sky and when you see a cloud think of me”). As a side bar, Paul & Jane would ‘officially’ end their relationship in July of 1968 (which did not appear obvious based on photos & an engagement etc.).
A turning point for both John & Paul … the end of multi-year relationships and the union with their soul mates.

my friends and i were outside that night. i remember being pushed and shoved by the crowd. john’s outfit by marijke (she pointed that out on a photo i posted on facebook). a car: i think that must have been part of the problem, cyn was always “almost” getting into the vibe… delaware dave: marriages break up, people hurt each other in the pursuit of happiness – it’s life. it’s not different if you’re famous, just more visible. michael, to my eyes, cyn never looks “comfortable”. and ishie – as usual – i couldn’t agree with you more. on a personal note, just got back home yesterday from 1 day in lisbon and 11 in london, where – despite being sick with a terrible cold every single day of my stay and the absolutely awful weather – i had a great time, stayed with lovely friends, the abbey road lectures were totally fab and i’m still sick, so will be staying in bed as much as possible to get better. being in london is always such a treat!
