The Elvis bass is fretless, i also have a pic of Paul from around 1983 playing a fretless Ricky, and the bass on ‘So bad’ sounds fretless to me.

Thank you for the fretless facts. It’s amazing enough that classical string instruments are all fretless. Were frets invented for the less competent?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fretless 6-string guitar. There must be lots of music theory that complicates the issue…but, my point is a simple one:
Fretless bass guitars require more finesse. When The Police emerged on the scene in the early 80s, I noticed that the bass player’s instrument was fretless(the first I’d seen). I wondered why McCartney never played one. He certainly had much more experience and he isn’t tone deaf. So, it basically aggravated me to hear Sting interviews where he would recall the fairly recent infancy of the band..boasting how the punk rock scene allowed anybody that knew three chords to form a band and participate! And, yet…there he was playing a fretless.
I’ve never even considered Sting to be a contender for Paul’s league of bass playing…
So, what’s up with the Sumner?
    When the eloquence escapes me…
The logic ties me up and rapes me.
da do do do with a fretless bass
is all I want to play for you…
