Gene died in Newhall, Ca. in October of 1971. That location is about 15 minute drive from here. How do you get to be ‘there’ when it’s happening…and, less than ten years later you’re all alone in Newhall?
That is beyond sad.
Without BeBopALuLa, it might not have been such fertile ground for the Mersey scene to be cultivated. To have been at The Cavern with The Beatles and then to have to die in Newhall…it just doesn’t seem fair. I hope Gene knew the brevity of his participation. I think the Beatles might have thought he was the real deal.
I’m trying to decide whose hand is in Gene’s jacket…John’s or Gene’s?
Or George’s? Nice tribute, Kwai, to one of the true American legends
I say it’s John’s (the Napoleon maneuver)
It looks like Gene might have something they want. Did he just return from the states(or, even better, Hamburg)?
“Hey, Gene…don’t hide it…divide it!”
(The contraband lover’s doxology)
I’ve seen Gene’s grave at Eternal Valley Cemetery in Newhall, which is basically now known as Santa Clarita (it’s grown massively since ’71). I have no info as to why Gene was out here at the time of his death. Family? Work? Just passing through?
It looks like Gene’s hand. Same skin tone as his face…?
