You go girl!!, Lady Gaga (who i adore) has the panties of the Lennonista’s in a twist, apparently they’re up in arm’s over Lady Gaga playing the white piano at the Dakota, obviously she was invited there by Yoko .. a woman who appeared on an album cover naked, but it’s not the done thing to touch John’s piano apprently, i don’t often stick up for Sean who i often find a prat, but this time (IMO) he’s right to rip into the fans complaining about this, Miss Tammy can’t stand one eyed fandom .. that borders on the scarey. Is it just me or does Lady Gaga look like she could be ready to rip out a fart in this photo? (Really .. but bonus points if this concept also upsets the angry’s of Mayfair).

Oh God, why won’t this terribly untalented woman go away? The idea of Lady Gaga playing John’s piano is just plain disturbing to me. (Says the crotchety 22 year old who hates almost all current popular music)

  2. viper says:

First of all, its not John’s piano. He bought it for Yoko as a birthday gift.

Piano’s were made to played. If the Lennon’s invited her to play the white piano, its non of anyone’s business but theirs.

I think Lady Gagag is brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed FAME and THE FAME MONSTER.

    “We all shine on… “

  3. YJ says:

I can’t stand her at all. I’m sorry.

  4. mel says:

So I can’t stand gaga personally, but if Yoko and Sean love her, then who cares? To each their own. Hopefully she doesn’t show up in the Macca household any time soon. :-)

  5. Laurrrr says:

Gaga is the best pop artist going today. Anyone who thinks she is as bad as the rest of the new pop artists dont know shit about her music. I know its cool to not like popular things, but lets just grow up a bit. Gaga is great and the fact that she would be in the situation to play this piano says a lot.

  6. Sara S. says:

I saw Lady Gaga in concert as an opening act right before she hit it big. Her performanceship impressed me then and still impresses me. Her music isn’t the style that I typically listen to, but some of it is good and I can see why she is so popular. From what I understand, she is a Beatles fan! I always say that us Beatles fans have to stick together. So I think “wow…what an amazing opportunity for her, a Beatles fan to play the famous white piano! You go Gaga!”

  7. Grace says:

@Laurrrr Actually, I don’t consider myself cool at all. All the cool people and hipsters LOVE Lady Gaga. My little sister is a big Gaga fan and I HAVE listened to her music. I’m not really sure what’s so impressive about it. It sounds like regurgitated club/dance music from the late 90’s. Radiohead, Modest Mouse and the White Stripes are about as current as the music I listen to gets.

  8. Scrubby says:

To say “the best pop star going today” is like saying “the best ballerina in Galveston.”

I could not care less about Gaga. She’s another ass shaker in a long line of them. But I don’t see why her mug should be in a Beatle photo blog (piano notwithstanding). And I agree with Miss Tammy… it looks to me like she is sitting in her own “pew” when the picture was taken.

    To each their own indeed.

  9. BeatleMark says:

I don’t blame her! If I was cool enough to be entertained by Yoko and Sean hell yeah I’d play a tune or two on the piano. Maybe write one while I’m there which is probably what she is/was doing in the picture. Then I’d sweet talk Sean into showing me his Daddy’s guitars…. :-)

  10. mcarp555 says:

How many people have played Mozart’s keyboard? Or Bach’s? Who cares? Which amongst us would not sit at that piano if given the chance? In twenty years, this woman will have been forgotten, Lennon will still be remembered, life goes on.

  11. JMA689 says:

I am not a Gaga fan, but:
1- she can play the piano for sure (go youtube “lady gaga imagine”)
2- she’s a beatles/lennon fan too (go youtube “lady gaga imagine”)
3- go youtube “lady gaga imagine”

but yes, I hope she stays away from Paul’s bass, now that’s a different story…
    *sharpens knives*

  12. p.s. says:

I think its wonderful gaga was invited to play at the dakota. proves to me how hip are yoko and shaun. I am completely reconciled to being a huge (and long term) fan of the Beatles AND lady gaga. and many, many other artists. im not just an undiscriminating fan, blindly following whats “hip”.
Gaga is very creative. she is classically trained pianist (check out the acoustic version of her song “speechless” on youtube). Writes her own songs, lyrics, makes own musical arranagements, designs many of her outfits. She is a HUGE john fan, cites him as an influence in several interviews. Gaga is not a vacuous artist, she is intelligent, thoughtful, and her music stands for something, she raises her voice against racism, homophobia, narrowmindedness. I saw her in concert in sydney this year, an energetic, creative performer.

Oh…I´m a fan of your blog and this photo had really surprised me. I´ve never seen here a photo of someone who doesnt have connection with The Beatles, so what is she doing on this blog? I play “imagine” with my piano, too, and I don´t see a photo of mine around here…
In five years this new lady wont exist any more, but they would still be the best band ever

  14. Tammy says:

Hi Je and all, it’s no biggie a photop of someone or something other than one of the Fabs on here, it’s related .. and for me very much so, i’m facinated with John’s time at the Dakota, the White piano abd that room is very much unchanged from 1980, it still has the same photo’s on it, so for that alone for me to have another pic of the Dakota is enough reason to print it. You may have missed my original point when posting this photo, that Beatle and Lennon fans were up in arm’s about it, and i scoff at that, i LOVE new music, i LOVE that new people are coming out and pushing boundaries, and more than anything i LOVE calling people on blind Beatle worship, the fact that people get uptight over someone playing a bloomin’ piano, it’s just a bit of wood with wires in it, just because John played it makes it mildly interesting, i wouldn’t mind having a play of it, but .. it’s just an inanimate object. I hope lady Gaga IS around in another five years, because she more than anyone i can think of today is singing about, and talking about issues that most everyone else isn’t, we we sure as shite need more than just hearing ‘Imagine’ or Ringo’s vacuous ‘Peace and love, peace and love’ mantra to to get us through, and move us forward in this world today. Btw, i have printed a photo on this blog before of just a piano, it was when they had one of John’s piano in Dealey plaza, again another act that had Beatle/Lennon fans up in arms .. i no kapish.

  15. Gillian says:

I’m sorry, but Lady Gaga has no right to play John Lennon’s piano, nor to be featured here among many other great photos of great people. First of all, she is not a musician. You can argue the fact that she has talent until the cows come home, but the fact is, if she has talent, she sure as hell doesn’t demonstrate that fact in the music that she produces. Songs such as “Paparazzi” and “Alejandro” are quite simply crap. No true talent went in to producing her “music”. No real instruments were used with any sort of ingenuity, her voice is Autotuned and the lyrics are about nothing of great import nor do they have the power to inspire anyone the way that The Beatles, John Lennon, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno or any other revolutionary artist has in the past. She is a series of publicity stunts and ridiculous outfits and, speaking as a complete worshipper of David Bowie as well as all things glam, she is a disgrace to the entire glam rock world. To dress that way, and to make those fashion statements, you have to back them up with new, revolutionary music that makes a true impact on the world and can help someone be lifted out of depression, encourage them to take a risk, to chase their dreams, or change their life around etc. Lady Gaga simply cannot accomplish this with her half-assed, computerized, talentless garbage that appears on her albums. John Lennon was a revolutionary man, and a visionary and a brilliant lyricist. Lady Gaga is none of the above and should have no business being at the piano because it is simply another one of her disgusting publicity stunts to get her more sales, more fans, and more sold-out tours. Because you know what? That is ALL she cares about. If she really cared about music, she would make music. But she doesn’t. Instead, she makes whatever might give her the most publicity and money. You can all say that it’s “just a piano” and that she “has talent” or whatever you want to defend her, but the fact is, she is a poser, and should neither be featured in this blog, nor be allowed to play a piano that represents a legacy. A legacy that she has just made a farce. She should be ashamed. As should all of you who support this disgusting display.

  16. Tammy says:

Whoo!!, LOVE it!! :-) I’m sniffing amyl reading that last post :-) love the passion. Enjoyment of music is all subjective and personal opinion, for me Bowie and Eno are two of the most boring, bland pieces of shit ever committed to tape, but that’s just my opinion, i curtsy most politely before those who do get enjoyment from those people, that’s their bag and i wouldn’t presume to judge.

One thing i will call everyone on, is when people presume to tell me what i should put on this blog, if i wanted to post a photo of a western samoan prairie dog defecating into an ice cream cone, or someone urinating the lyrics to Liverpool 8 into the snow, i would .. and i just might :-) but i do like debate and opinion, don’t forget, no one is right and wrong here, it’s just opinion.

    Greg xoxo

  17. Gillian says:

While I totally respect you for not judging based on music taste etc. I find the idea of David Bowie being “bland” to be utterly unfathomable. The man changed his hair every year and went through a phase of wearing sparkly spandex and kimonos. His music also displayed this diversity and lack of regard for standards. Ever listened to Suffragette City? Or Width of a Circle?

Also, I would personally not be able to describe a man who hand-made his own synthesizers (Brian Eno) bland. But…I suppose to each his own in this case…I also don’t want to cram up this place with a David Bowie debate =P

However, to put emphasis on the fact that I simply cannot conceive this man as being “bland”…

  18. stephanie says:

Everyone knows music tastes are subjective. You need to respect other people’s right to their own music tastes without judging them !!

My respect for another’s opinion on music stops when that opinion cites information as “fact” which is completely wrong . You obviously cant stand lady gagas music and im not going to try and persuade you otherwise. I love her music. I also passionately love the Beatles and their solo work. I happen to have very diverse tastes in music.

    (1) “but Lady Gaga has no right to play John Lennon’s piano”. She has EVERY right to play it because the owners, Yoko & Sean, invited her to.

    (2) “her voice is Autotuned”. what basis do you claim this? Have you seen her live??? I doubt it. I have seen her perform 2 hour show, she sings close to pitch perfect every song, NO autotune, overdubs or voice manipulation. She has a fantastic, strong live voice. I happen to have perfect pitch myself so I know when I hear an artist demonstrate it.

    (3) “no real instruments were used with any sort of ingenuity”. Electronica and Dance Music is a different genre. Its not designed to be instrument based. Its like complaining that theres no banjo in Racmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3. Nevertless, in her live shows Gaga plays grand piano fluently. Her band includes of rythym bass guitarists. (wow, that idea might catch on). She is a classically trained pianist. Before she became lady gaga she used to perform live beautiful ballads, which she wrote, just herself singing and playing grand piano. Check out Youtube for proof. Ive seen her play with my own eyes. She is a more talented pianist than John , and George. (not quite Paul on Piano, but close, sorry Tammy).

    (4) So David Bowie is a great, revolutionary lyricist???:
“Danced with you too long Something in the air Something in the air
    Do do do do
    Do do do do”
(David Bowie , Something In The Air)

    Paul :

    “ 1 2 3 4 5 Lets Go For A Drive”

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That’s the end’a little girl
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na

  19. Tammy says:

Soooooo, is it too early to post my photo of the Western Samoan prairie dog? :-)

  20. stephanie says:

    Id be getting it ready.

PS typo in my post , meant to say rythym AND bass guitar

  21. stephanie says:

Sean Lennon via Twitter: “Pianos meant are to be played” “What should we do, lock it away in a dusty room? So judgmental…Come on, lighten up… life’s too short, there’re enough real problems in the world. ”

Sean then clarified that the piano did not, in fact, belong to his father but to Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono.

“Firstly, he gave that piano to my mother for her birthday, it is hers, secondly, he was not uptight the way you seem to be,” he tweeted.

Though Lennon was considered one of the most gifted singer-songwriters in history, Gaga is no slouch at the piano herself. She learned to play at the age of four, wrote her first piano ballad at 13 and performed open mic nights at 14.

The 24-year-old singer, who often covers “Imagine” during her live shows, told contactmusic.com last year that in 1968 she would have probably been like another other crazed Beatles fan.

“I might be arguing with Yoko Ono and trying to win John Lennon’s heart and chasing The Beatles in a bus on LSD, hoping that one of them hands me a microphone one day,” she said.

  22. Gillian says:

First, I would like to apologize for crowding this with a debate, but I simply must make one more post in response to Stephanie.
And I do respect people’s music choices, I just don’t agree with a lot of them and I am judging the artist, not the fans. If I do judge the fans, I judge how well they have thought about who Lady Gaga is. It’s my opinion.

#1: I have never agreed with many of Yoko’s decisions. I am perfectly entitled to disagree with this one.

#2: Her voice does get Autotuned. Maybe not during concerts, but for recording purposes, yes. You can always hear it. I have a problem with Autotuning because it makes the whole recording sound so impersonal, but I will currently leave out my issues with overuse of technologies with recording. And if she is so amazing vocally, why not make songs that accent that and not use the Autotune? And no, I don’t go to concerts that feature artists I despise.

#3: You seemed to leave out the “ingenuity” part of my statement. How convenient for you. Electronica etc. can use technology and different types of instruments with great ingenuity, like I mentioned above, Brian Eno (revolutionist in New Wave, and other genres which most Electronica etc. is based on) used to create his own synthesizers, and physically create new sounds and new melodies. The melody is just as important to a song as the lyrics. And if the melody isn’t spectacular, then there must be amazing lyrics to back it up. I do not count “My my my my my my poker face” as amazing lyrics. This leads wonderfully into the next point.

#4: How nice, you tried your hardest to find the fluffiest lyrics you could. Here’s some lyrics that Lady Gaga can simply not match:

And when the broken hearted people
    Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.

So keep on playing those mind games together
Faith in the future, outta the now
You just can’t beat on those mind guerrillas
Absolute elsewhere in the stones of your mind
Yeah we’re playing those mind games forever
Projecting our images in space and in time

Love is careless in its choosing – sweeping over cross a baby
    Love descends on those defenseless
Idiot love will spark the fusion
Inspirations have I none – just to touch the flaming dove
All I have is my love of love – and love is not loving
    (Taken from Soul Love, 1972)

And there is plenty more where that came from.
I have yet to hear a Lady Gaga song (and yes, I have heard many of them) that comes close to inspiring me like the above songs.

  23. Nancy says:

Sean is actually the one who invited her over. And as someone who knew Yoko and Sean fairly well, I’d say they’re both great people and may have whatever guests they want at their house.
