DECEMBER 1ST 1980:

What a find!!, a pic of John which i believe to be from December 1st 1980, i have no other info on this pic, other than it was dated ‘December 1 1980′. This pic has Miss Tammy as damp as a cup cake, December 1 was one of the missing days we don’t have documented in photographic form from that month. Everything ties in that this date is correct, John looks as if his hair is freshly washed, it has the same part, and same style as the photo’s that Annie Leibovitz took of John on December 3rd, where is hair looked the same, just not as freshly washed. I have added the photo to the December 1980 timeline HERE“.

WOW! This IS a find and a great photo of John. I just loved his 1980 look. Handsome … happy … with a hairstyle showing a hint of the Beatle days! This is a wonderful addition to the timeline for December 1980.
Lizzie is going to LOVE this!

man…that date is like a dagger in my heart…

Kwai … I couldn’t agree with you more.
Looking at the photos from December 1 – (earlier in the day of )December 8th, you can feel that those days were filled with excitement & promise. John was back, Yoko was by his side and they were presenting the world with their “heart play”. It was their gift of affirmation. They made it through the rough spots and were looking forward to the future and wishing the same for us. Who would have ever thought that this would also be his ‘swan song’.
I try very hard to find solace in the fact that John had successfully dealt with past demons, found inner peace and was moving on.
His loss will always be felt.

Not for nothing, you sure this is Dec. 1980 ??
I know it is 1980 but the sun looks a little too strong and bright for a N.Y.
Dec. sun. I remember Mon. Dec 8, 1980 was a warm day (believe me I remember it like it was yesterday, but this looks a bit earlier in the fall, like the picture of when John was getting out of the limo with the scarf. You all know what I mean. Then again I can be wrong.

    Hi There,
A fantastic find – I love pictures of John particularly from the 1979/1980 period. Just one thing – I believe the photo call with Annie Liebovitz was on December 8, not the 3rd? Maybe there were two sessions on two separate days, I’m not sure…anyhow…this is superb!

  13. A different Jennifer says:

Thank you SO MUCH for this picture!!!!!!

Since, in most cases, we unfortunately have no proper documentation of John’s later photos, I tend to base my opinions of dates of his photos from November – December by his hair and sideburns (for example, on 2 November 1980 – on the “Woman” 45 cover, he had this hair style but no sideburns. The sideburns came in mid November while the hair stayed the same – check out the pics from 26 November, 1980 – even the pics from 8 December, 1980). I personally think that anyone who thinks he didn’t have a haircut on or after 4 December – 6 December should have their eyed checked professionally (it’s so obvious). This completely appears to be from approximately December 1, 1980, but could easily be 2 weeks before. My question to you is what is the source of the date and picture? I would love to believe that this is actually from the 1st day of the last month of his life, but I believe a little proof of the date is in order.

  15. Tammy says:

Can’t prove it, other than it was sent to me from a source who is ‘in’, and i shant name them, or give any further info, the photo was dated Dec 1st. I understand your points, but i’m holding firm that this is indeed from December 1st, if for no other reason than the points i made in the post about this being a washed version of the Dec 3rd photo’s, but unless something amazing happens we’ll only be able to guess and banter conjecture. Now, the hair cut issue STILL drives me insane, with the whole haircut seen on Dec 6th, and then the obvious one from the 8th.

  16. sun_runner says:

We may disagree on the haircut issue, but still, thanks a million for posting this unseen picture! And I surely hope your source has more pictures from this date!

And – not to beat a dead horse – but here’s my reasoning on the haircut issue…on 3 December – pics from the Dakota, Record Plant, and playing the guitar on the bed – he hadn’t yet had the haircut. No photos that I am aware of were taken during the day of 4 December. But, in the early morning hours of 5 December (apparently), Gruen took photos of Lennon outside of the studio wearing a hat after an all night recording session – and, to me, it’s obvious his haircut had already taken place. Even with the hat, you can tell the sides and top of his hair had been cut already. So my theory is that his haircut took place on 4 December.

Now – on to 6 December – haircut had been done (obviously), but it wasn’t combed or styled at all. No pictures are documented for 7 December, but on his final day, he simply just brushed and styled his hair back (and shaved, which may give the appearance of a haircut). Look at other pictures dated on 8 December and you can see his hair isn’t any shorter than on 6 December.

And two other points, and I promised I’m finished:

    1. John wasn’t one for haircuts
    2. Why would someone have 2 haircuts in 2 days?

Ok, I said my piece, so thank you, thank you, and thank you to you and your source for the new picture!

    Take care!

i just think he looked soooo gorgeous in 1980… it’s a mixture of joy and sadness to look at these pictures. i was vacationing in new york that summer but didn’t hang around the dakota nor the studio (my friend’s friend found out he was recording and told him) because i felt i had bothered him enough hanging around in the late 60′s… this left me with the sadness of never having spoken to john as an adult… it would have been heaven to see him again and show him my then 8-year-old daughter!

  18. Kwai Chang says:

    @Lizzie…
very beautiful words…which made me wonder:
    why do people become adults?
    and if I don’t want to…do I have to?
    (that’s my best John impression)

  19. lizzie says:

dear kwai, sometimes i feel i’m a teenager in disguise… at almost 61 (later this month).

  20. Kwai Chang says:

    Lizzie…me, too
(I’m 52 but I’m planning on living to be 125…
    so I’m not even halfway…
    Jai Guru Deva Om)
    wink…wink

  21. Vince says:

This great photo, The first taken in December 1980 that we are now aware of almost completes the photo Diary of John’s Last Week. Thanks a Million Tammy !!
