Beatle Photo Blog devotee, pen pal seeker from The Beatle Book and all round nice guy Mark Lewisohn has this week launched the first volume of his Beatle meister work, the cats whiskers of Beatle biographies ‘All these years’.

Apart from moistening a finger to drag across my computer screen, to turn the pages on the preview, i haven’t yet had the chance to read it (who do you have to sleep with in Australia to get a preview copy?).

Miss Tammy is holding out for the mega expanded edition that is being issued soon after, with some things in life size does matter, so i must resist the urge for instant gratification, and hold out for the big pay off. The suspense is killing me .. i hope it lasts.

The trade edition is here now, all 960 scintilating and riveting pages. This is a must purchase situation, i’ve heard nothing but raves, and we all know with Mark the detail will be correct and amazing.

Like you, I’m waiting for the mega version… my, how we’ve matured in our need for instant Beatle gratification! 😉 Just a bit scared of the shipping cost, as I hear it weighs 20 lbs. and my copy will have a long journey over the Pond and then an entire continent. I started to read the preview, but had to stop so I can savor the full version when it arrives just in time for Thanksgiving. Gobble, gobble indeed.

My autographed copy was mailed last week. I am hoping it arrives this week!! :)

Cant wait to read this master work. Massive Congratulations and deep gratitude are due to Mark Lewisohn for his mighty effort. What an honour to Ms Tammy that Mark provides a link to this blog on his web site.

Footnote: just over twenty years ago I met one of Mark Lewisohn’s nephews, whilst waiting in a queue to meet…. Paul McCartney ! True story!! It was an in-store signing for “Off The Ground” here in Sydney, on Sat 17th March 1993. I cant remember the young chap’s name (Mark’s nephew) but I remember he was very friendly, and was wearing a Liverpool (England) football jersey, we got on well and chatted for hours about our love of all things Beatle and Macca. In fact i was enthralled with his stories of how he had been in the audience for a number of Macca’s UK appearances, including the “unlplugged” concert. And yes, we were just about the last people to make it in to the store to meet Paul, one of the thrills of my life.

correction: was Sat 20th March 1993.

I am a sucker. I have pre-ordered the book and I am waiting on it to arrive. I also wanted to know who I needed to sleep with to get an advanced copy. Seriously….Mark recommends our blogs but doesn’t get us early copies? But…I also know that I will end up buying the deluxe version, so he will get a lot of my money. Oh well…it will be amazing to read.

  6. Mark also kindly mentions my blog on his site. I’ve read the book, and got it early, but this was because Waterstone’s here in Blighty put copies on the shelves a week before publication, so I bought one and cancelled my pre-order. I was very happy to pay. Mark’s put 10 years into this project, and the more people who actually buy it the better. Paying for the book, like most people have to, does not make you “a sucker”. It just means you are supporting an on-going project, which we all want to see reach a successful conclusion.
I know the deluxe edition is a lot of money, but it’s a huge book (or pair of books) and it’s not like we haven’t had years to save! Plus the trade edition can be bought very reasonably on-line: all a very fair deal, as far as I’m concerned.

  7. Ishie says:

I am eagerly awaiting my autographed copy as well.
This project is a huge undertaking and as anyone who has been a fan of Mark’s knows he’s a thorough researcher. He writes with honesty, with love and with respect for the band as a whole as individuals. He always surprises (me at least) with new facts, stories and photos. He has that incredible ability of making the reader feel that they are there and part of the story.
I have communicated with him several times and he is funny, kind and very humble.
To all you who have purchased or will purchase this book … Enjoy!
    My best to all!

    “It’s a thousand pages…give or take a few”
I just read the table of contents and the introduction on the Amazon ‘look inside’ feature. Let me tell you…this ‘little’ number has got my juices a-flowing! Just reading the table of contents was exciting. It hints at why the majority of Beatle books have failed to meet their creative objective…but, none of that matters now! Mark Lewisohn may very well complete the evolution of written Beatle history with this three volume series. I will welcome that eventuality should it transpire.
The greatest story is about to be told. A story that really happened. A story that could never happen again. A story that is bigger than any other story. Maybe, even bigger than the story of Jesus. Is that possible? And, if it is…HOW did it happen? What did these four guys have that eluded everyone else? And, how much of it were they supposed to give back to the world?
Was it Magic? Luck? Charisma? Skill? Generosity? Determination?
Or…was it just a simple matter
…of ‘the love you take’ being equal to ‘the love you make’?
Finally, we can know how the Universe allowed four of these individuals to find each other and prove it…because, finally, The Universe has sent someone who is willing to tell it.
    Lewisohn: The OTHER ‘5th Beatle’!!!
    Congratulations, Mark
(And, a very sincere Thank You)

PS- Is the “Author’s Cut” import only in the U.S.?

  9. Ishie says:

Lovely comment Kwai … and I couldn’t agree more.

Mark is the one that can tell the story of how 4 Liverpudlian lads became the “game changers” (if you will) for generations to come. They were an amalgam of great timing, creativity, talent and spirit. They gave it all … and 50 years on through some mystical force, they still are!

    Remarkable ….

  10. Kwai Chang says:

    Thank you.
I doubt that anyone in the industry would admit it…
but, let’s face it…The Beatles are carrying what’s left of the music industry.
Most band’s won’t move as many retail units in a career that The Beatles will this year…
    or next year…
    or, the next…
    So on, and, so for!

  11. Derek says:

Hmmm, going to wait for the Big Job version myself.
Good time to be a Beatlemaniac innit?

  12. maria.m says:

  13. Cara says:

@Kwai ~ Yes, for now the only way we Yanks can get the mega version is by import only. Apparently, the U.S. publisher didn’t buy the “author’s cut”… yet. They may well do, but I can’t wait that long and I’m happy to support the Royal Mail.

I’m with you, Derek! Feels like the mid ’90s, with all the Anthology excitement.

  14. Tammy says:

In a strange twist of fate i too have been working on a project about possibly the second greatest band the world has known, Marks Beatle tome has somewhat overshadowed the release last week of the book i’ve sweated over for the past twenty years “Peaches: No Substitute”.

Sure, coming in at only 950 pages my book doesn’t quite match Marks for length, and true, i AM only doing two volumes, the first covers ‘March 1978 – April 1978’ and the second gets more indepth with the studio work and break up of Peaches ‘May 1978 – July 1978’.

For anyone who’s interested i’ll be doing an instore signing this Saturday at Dapto mall. Those sleeping out overnight to ensure a signature, may i sugest you bring along a can of Mace, a tazer and a rusty rake .. i’m not saying the area is sketchy .. but ..

Please click on the link below to be transported back in time, to a band who revolutionised music and fashion in Australia, and who single handedly brought about the world wide acceptance of home perms and crimping wands.

  15. Tammy says:

I was only joking about sleeping with someone for a freebie, i sleep with lots of people, and don’t get a thank you, let alone a book :-)

I think i’m gonna have to pop and get the trade edition before the mega version, i used to be into waiting and deprivation, these days i find i need more instant gratification :-)

  16. Sara S. says:

I was only joking as well. I am just jealous that I am not reading the book right now, but am waiting on the mailman to deliver it. I am glad to pay for it. But I do feel like a sucker in that I am willing to buy both the regular and deluxe versions. I am a “sucker” for Beatles books. I get sucked into them and will always buy them. That is what I meant. I have been anxious to read this book for many years and am just anxious to get to it now that is is officially released, especially when so many who had advantance copies are finishing up.

  17. Nick Detaranto says:

Oh, my! It has arrived today! I am in awe!
