This was actually taken in late 1965 as part of a photoshoot for Fabulous magazine. The art department added the tache and made it the cover to a 1966 issue.

Was Fabulous magazine a UK publication?
Or was it like SPEC, 16, FAVE, Datebook, etc?
(so was the ‘tacheLESS’ version in the article?)

Fabulous magazine started in February 1964 (guess who was on the cover of the first issue?), published by Fleetway Publications, in London and was an A3 portrait sized weekly magazine – mainly catering for teenage girls – but it was popular with both sexes, mainly for the half dozen colour posters that appeared each week (including a pull-out two-page spread in the centre – the pic Tammy recently posted of Paul with a champagne glass – captioned ‘Cheers, Sweetie’ was just such an example). The writing was streets ahead of the junk that was often in the US teen mags. These mags sometimes reproduced some of the pics and articles that originally appeared in Fabulous. Fabulous often got scoops – for example, Neil Aspinall writing a weekly column in 1966-67 about the boys’ exploits.
The Charlie Chaplin Paul pic here was just used in this fashion for the cover (and did not appear undoctored elsewhere in the mag).

I love this blog! (Thank you, Car)
May I extoll the virtues of having such a great blog to hang out at. An abundance of kindness and generosity to go with the greatness that also exists here makes this a very special place, indeed.
