Is that Bowie, in the flat cap, standing in the doorway opposite?

  7. Chelsea says:

This is a great one. It makes me so sad that John and George are gone, not only for all of the obvious reasons, but also because I think they both would have been awesome old men. John would have just continued to be a cheeky guy, making people who spew BS uncomfortable and George would have been his lovely, hilarious self, puddling around in his garden. Alas …

  8. Since 1963 says:

I know most shots from “that era” was in b/w, but did John darken his hair to fit the uniformity of the group look? Here in this shot, and in Linda’s form the SR cover shoot, the red in his hair shows so prominently. Just makes me wonder. Brian did get John into a suit, right. What else was done to him? :0

  11. henry says:

hi Lizzie do you agree with kth? was it the real colour of John’s hair?

  12. Cara says:

@ Since 1963 ~ I’ve read on several occasions accounts of people meeting John circa ’64 or ’65 where they have commented on how much more auburn his hair is in person than in photos. I think the intensity of his color varied with length, sun exposure, age, etc…. thinner hair is often lighter (or appears so) and his hair did thin a bit over the years. But I defer to Lizzie….

  13. Cara says:

P.S. In the Anthology, didn’t Paul refer to John’s hair as “blondish” when he described the first time they met? I think his hair color went through many natural changes… another thing that made him so damn cool!

  14. Paulo Henrique says:

    10 october 1980?????? John dead in 9 october 1980

  15. Ishie says:

Paulo, John’s birthday is October 9th, he passed on December 8, 1980.

  16. stephanie says:

John did not dye his hair.

Slight differences of hair colour in various 1980 photos, were explained by differing light conditions.

Bright sun, overcast, camera flash, late afternoon sun, can all give the impression of different hair colour, but all optical illusions.

  17. A different Jennifer says:

I think he looks SO handsome in this picture. I kind of like his late 1980 style a lot.

  18. Tammy says:

Also tonsorial hygine comes into play, a nicely washed mop will always look lighter, unwashed and slightly (balk .. gag .. heave .. dry retch) oily hair will look darker.

  19. Lizzie says:

that’s exactly what i was going to say, tammy. sometimes his hair was lighter than others, and i believe it depended on the washing routine. it was definitely light, though not totally blond. his eyes too, were quite light. i love it when i find a photo that shows the real color of his eyes. he is certainly the handsomest, sexiest man these eyes of mine have ever seen.

  20. sec says:

John had most beautiful combo hair color/eye color I’ve ever encountered. I’m not surprised Paul has maintained that first impression memory of John having blondish hair. (It ranged from blondish to chestnut) In fact, I’ll put it out there that Paul’s chosen dye color is influenced by his appreciation for John’s color!

  21. betty says:

Johns eye look very hazel in the recent Rolling stone Magazine with John on the cover. Paul says that John’s mom had red hair, she may have passed a bit of that to john. About Paul’ss hair, I believe I read he said his was mistaken for brown but it was actually black or was it the other way around?
anyway, nobody can convince me that Ringo doesn’t have one of the most beautiful eyes on a human being.

  22. greg raymond says:

I can’t believe John would ever dye his hair. John had said in many interviews how he wanted to grow old. He was an au natural type guy. He didn’t trim his beard when he would grow it. The lighter hair is probably due to the fact that he let it grow quite long by summer of 1980 and spending so much time in the Bermudan sun would certainly have lightened it. By mid August 1980 when he started cutting it regularly again all that sun-bleaching probably just got cut off.
