I believe this was at the NYC premiere of The Concert For Bangla Desh film?
If this is indeed a pic taken that day then it is reportedly March 22, 1972 at the DeMille theatre in New York. It was a special preview screening the day before it’s premiere.
What was the story with Bangla Desh, George asked John to play but he didn’t want Yoko to be be on stage so John refused ? This story made the rounds back in the day but is it actually true ? Also I remember hearing Paul didn’t play because of all the legal hassles, anyone ?
Alex, it depends who you believe. Some say John agreed to go on without Yoko but she got angry, causing him to fly home to London without her. Another version has John upset about Yoko not being invited. Yet another version (compatible with either of the two above, btw) says that John was fearful that he would be tricked into some kind of Fab reunion on stage. And Paul, yeah… he was still hurt by all the bad biz between them. (Understandable in ’70, but a bit questionable in ’88, imho.)
Oops, I mean ’71.
The real thing is Yoko got agry after George refused her request to have the Plastic Ono Band topping the bill after the Bob Dylan.
Just kidding, imagine, what would have Jockandyono played for Bangla Desh. John could have done Imagine, Give Peace a Chance, Instant Karma, Come Together and an oldie like Money (That’s What I Want), while Yoko would have done Midsummer New York and Don’t Worry Kyoko.
Fernando those two Yoko songs you mentioned is probably the reason why he didn’t want her on stage…..
I took this photo and it was the premiere of the movie for the concert for bangla desh in NYC at the DeMille theatre on Broadway.
Do you think you can either GIVE me credit for the photo I TOOK that you have shown above…OR would you be kind enough to remove it?
Thank you for your time and consideration…
As far as the Concert for BanglaDesh, George was in no mood to hear Yoko do her thing. George was kind enough to play with John & Yoko War is over concert in the UK, when he brought Clapton along for the venue. George wanted this concert to be exactly that, A CONCERT….There wasn’t any room for whatever it is that Yoko does.
Let’s face it, she really cannot sing no matter who she married. She is known to toss hissy fits to get her way and in order not to have to deal with her moods, John bowed down to her tantrum and went home.
