That’s Glyn Johns in the middle. This is May 1967 Olympic Studios during the Stones’ Satanic Majesties sessions – the same time of the We Love You session (with both John and Paul).
This breathless account of the ‘We Love You’ session from ’2Stoned’ by the incomparable Andrew Loog Oldham:
‘You have to know this about the twin Mop Tops. They never let love and peace bring or slow them down. A feast of velvet, silk, hustle and speed hovered into Olympic like knights of the real table. Prior to their arrival the atmosphere in the studio had been akin to a bunch of relatives waiting graveside for a priest to do the honours and give living death some order and shine. The two Beatles didn’t listen to the ‘We Love You’ track for much longer than they’d spent running down ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ to my songless Stones just two and one half years before. They picked up the cans and sniffed each other out like two dogs in heat for the right part. Harmonic results from the Stones were, for the most part, either ‘interesting’ or the result of hard work. John and Paul just glided in and changed a runway into an aeroplane with wings. Their voices locked and smiled like brothers, creating the signposts to give the disarray, the fractured parts and
rhythms something to belong and cling to. Everybody, my gobsmacked Stones as well, straightened up as vision became reality. We’d just had another major lesson from the guv’nors as to what this recording thing was all about. In plain English, I’d just seen and heard a miracle.’
If you haven’t already, both of the Loog’s books are full of this marvellous prose. Must-reads indeed.
Aren’t these pictures from a Marianne Faithfull session?
It’s interesting that whilst we have pictures of Paul at Olympic with Mick and Glyn, and Paul with Keef and Prince “Stash” there are none of John…..
John and Paul also sang on Sing This All Together— but I don’t know if that was a different occasion to We Love You. (Cracking text from Loog OId Ham)
Sorry for the confusion. I’ve just gone back and checked and yes you are correct Ashwom – these pics were taken at the Marianne Faithfull session at Decca. What made me think it was a Stones session at Olympic was the presence of Glyn Johns who hardly worked anywhere else but Olympic in 1967. But Gered Mankowitz who took these pics confirms they are from the Marianne session at Decca. As I have pointed out, in another post I think the session could well have taken place on May 19 1967 as Paul is wearing more or less the same clothes as he wore to the Sgt Pepper press party.
